February is just around the corner and so is the 2018 EAA Skiplane Fly-In! The annual Fly-In regularly sees 25 skiplanes and draws crowds of visitors. February 10th, between 10am and 1:30pm, at Pioneer Airport in Oshkosh, WI.
The 2018 EAA Skiplane Fly-In celebrates the Experimental Aircraft Association’s (EEA) 26th anniversary. The EAA flying club traditionally focused on homebuilt planes but now includes most aspects of aviation and aeronautics. If the name “EAA” looks familiar to you, that’s because they also host the incredible EAA AirVenture Oshkosh air show at the end of July each year.
Last year’s Skiplane Fly-In was incredibly successful, drawing 28 planes and upwards of 1,500 people in attendance! Much of last year’s success was due to a well timed and healthy snowfall. The weather for the 2018 EAA Skiplane Fly-In seems to have similar potential and the excitement is building!
There’s nothing quite like the EAA Skiplane Fly-In. It’s a fascinating spectacle of a seemingly endless series of skiplanes landing, taxiing, and taking off. It’s also a chance to meet the pilots and inspect these incredible planes close-up.
Past Fly-Ins have seen up to 30 skiplanes and from many different states. Most of the skiplanes arrive mid-morning and stay until mid-afternoon, weather permitting.
The 2018 EAA Skiplane Fly-In is free, open to the public, and topped off with complimentary chili and cake. No, really. It is held at the EAA AirVenture Museum’s Pioneer Airport in Oshkosh, WI. The nearby EAA AirVenture Museum is also worth the small price of admission, with numerous exhibits and more than 200 historic airplanes. Signs at the museum will direct you to the skiplane area upon your arrival. Shuttle services from Wittman Regional Airport are available, as well.
