The Oshkosh Bird Fest precedes International Migratory Bird Day (May 13th and 14th in 2017) with a full schedule of avian activities. You’ll meet live birds of prey, see a bird banding demonstration, learn how to “birdscape” your yard, and much more!
A number of experts will be on hand to answer your questions on a wide range of bird-related subjects. The real stars of the show, however, will be the birds. Both those visiting the festival with handlers as well as those in the wild. You will definitely want to bring along your binoculars to fully enjoy this event!
In fact, one of the more popular activities at the event – The Big Sit – asks you to bring a comfortable chair and binoculars. The Big Sit is sometimes described as a tailgate party for birders: participants sit inside a big circle observing and listening to wild birds. The Big Sit is lead by a local bird expert who will inform you about the birds that you see and hear.
The Live Birds of Prey presentations offer a different kind of opportunity to observe birds. Instead of little birds off in some tree or bush, however, these are owls and hawks up close! There will also be local vendors selling native plants that are beneficial to birds and well suited to the area.

While most of the Oshkosh Bird Fest events and attractions take place at Menominee Park, not all of them do!
New to the fest this year is “Bird Fest Under the Dome 2017,” at the Oshkosh Public Library. This amazing exhibit, sponsored by the Oshkosh Photography Group in the Waters Building, features wild bird photography from 23 different photographers from across the state. A Downtown Gallery Walk takes place between 6pm and 9pm, a Student Bird Art Exhibition is at the Masonic Center, and there will be many related events and sales at local businesses.
Wisconsin loves birds and Oshkosh is one of 50 “Bird Cities” in the state. The “Bird City Wisconsin” program is similar to that of the “Tree City USA” program: a conservation program from The Milwaukee Audubon Society aimed at wild birds. If you love birds, don’t miss the 2017 Oshkosh Bird Fest!
