Halloween falls on a Friday this year, so what are your big plans? Oshkosh is the place to be with two very spooky but fun things to do and all within walking distance from the inn.

On Friday, October 31st, the Grand Opera House with host the Spirits of the Grand at Tunnel 24: The speakeasy for only one night from 7:00-7:30. Tickets prices are $15.00 with include a specialty cocktail. In case your wondering, it is PG-13 rated.  This is an annual haunted history tour but new this year is Tunnel 24 taking you right back to 1928. The jazz birds and  mobsters will take you through the “underground tunnels of Oshkosh” where you will hear stories of haunted history  and end up at The Golden Peacock Club for a haunted happy hour. The drama will continue though at the Grand Lounge with charleston, jazz, blues and brawling. Something you will not want to miss!

On Saturday, November 1, Casks and Caskets will be holding the best home brew contest from 7:00-10:00 at the Oshkosh Convention and Visitors Bureau to benefit the Oshkosh Hunger Force. With live music from Sly Joe and the Smooth Operators, a costume contest, a wide variety of beer, wine, mead and cider styles, a huge silent auction and door prizes with a post event party at  Beckets, this is a great weekend to celebrate here in Oshkosh.

Happy Mothers Day

Mom's 50th b-day

My Mom- Debbie

First off, I just want to say Happy Mothers Day to my Mom and all the other Moms out there this weekend. As much as I enjoy what I do for a living, I usually miss out on weekend activities with our friends and have to cut short holiday gatherings with family due to having guests at the inn. This Mothers Day day is no exception. My Mom lives on the other side of the state, and though it is only a 2 1/2 hour drive, I will have to find another time to visit. She runs a greenhouse, so I know she will be plenty busy herself.  Since I am a Mom myself though, I am very lucky to be able to spend the day with my daughter. Traditionally, we like to get flowers in the ground on Mothers Day but the last few years we have learned that we usually get one more freeze and we are outside covering up and hoping that we can save our new garden, so we may put it off for one week.

If you are lucky enough to be able to spend the day with your Mom and want to do something special, may we recommend having a girls weekend away at a bed and breakfast :) where a comfy bed and delicious home made breakfast is always included plus home made desserts and a wine and cheese social both Friday and Saturday night.  If that is not possible, brunch is always lovely, as Oshkosh has many brunch choices to choose from this Mothers Day, including the Roxy which is located downtown among many great retail stores. Oshkosh Community Players also presents, Barefoot in the Park at the Grand Opera House May 8-10.

Whatever you decide to do this weekend, tell your Mom that you love her. It will be the best gift you can give her.

Spirits of the Grand

Did you know that the Grand is listed as one of the most haunted places in America? But is the Grand really haunted? I guess you will have to come and find out for yourself. The beautiful and historic Grand Opera house has been beautifully restored and has been home to many outstanding local and national productions, but this time of year it has many different types of characters to witness.

There will be actor-guides who will portray themselves from characters of the 1880′s that will tour you through the Grand, that will lead you through the auditorium, stage, dressing rooms and even a few tight spaces under the theater itself.  You will learn about the history of the Grand, which is the oldest operating theater in the State of Wisconsin. You may even meet a few “personalities” yourself who have been seen throughout the years from their ghostly images and sounds. The Grand may look different this time of year with the flickering lamps and black sheathing to set the stage.  Even a faint mist onstage will add to the spine tingling atmosphere.

SPIRITS OF THE GRAND is open for public tours at selected times, October 18-19 & 24-26, 2013 from 7:30-10:00 PM. The SPIRITS tour is also available on a limited basis for private events, company Halloween parties, and “candlelight” guided tours. For private tours and parties, contact The Grand’s administrative office at 920-424-2350
