February events in Oshkosh

Check out all these great events in Oshkosh in February. I would like to see some of these frigid temps let up a bit but I know is good for the EAA SkiPlane Fly-In and for Battle on Bago, but I am not so sure the plungers are going to appreciate it,even if it is “freezing for a reason”.

EAA skiplane fly inSaturday, February 6 beginning at 10:00 AM and running until 1:30 PM is the annual EAA Skiplane Fly-In at the EAA AirVenture Museum.  This is a very special winter event in Oshkosh that has welcomed more than 30 skiplanes in the past. This event is free of charge to the general pubic and includes complimentary chili and cake, however regular admission rates apply for guests visiting the museum itself.

February 19-20 is the annual Oshkosh Polar plunge located at Menominee Park in Millers Bay.  Last year, 1,700 people took part in this great cause and after the donations were tallied, they raised more than $444,000 for Special Olympics Wisconsin. Take part in this event solely or put together a team.  If your team raises over $2500.00, you will earn your choice of team party at participating locations.

Starting Friday at 5:30 till 9:00 PM, enjoy happy hour inside the entertainment tent with live music and food and drink specials. Saturday at 9:00 begins registration and the 5K begins after.

Get the little ones started in this event early as the pee wee plunge begins at 11:00 AM. From 12-3 live music by RPM in the WIXX tent and Spitfire rodeo in the Y100 tent will be playing while the plunging takes place. I am sure you will be working up an appetite before and after so take part in the Buffalo Wild Wing eating contest in the entertainment tent at 1:45. Now if you are too chicken to plunge, that’s okay, You can still volunteer or donate. After all, its for a good cause.

Battle on Bago is starting its 9th season February 26-27th. at Menominee Park with free admission with live music both evenings! $275,000 worth of prizes are given away and you don’t even have to fish to participate. Just come down and enjoy great food, drink, entertainment and raffle prizes. Battle on Bago was created in 2007 by a group of five Oshkosh Southwest Rotarian in order to support area youth and conservation efforts throughout the state of Wisconsin. This is the Midwest’s largest ice fishing tournament of the year.

Battle on Bago

February 17, 2014 by braytonbb

Battle on Bago (Winnebago) is here again this Friday February 21 and Saturday February 22nd. It is the largest ice fishing tournament around with over $160,000 in cash and prizes to be given away.

For those that don’t know, Lake Winnebago is 10×30 miles, 88 miles of shoreline and an average of 15 to 21 feet deep.

How safe is it to be out on the ice with the tent, thousands of people, cars and music? Great question? This year is one of the best with the brutal cold temps we have had. Clear, solid ice around 2″-3″ thick only is sufficient to hold one person walking. This year though the ice is about 30+ in thickness and the has been great fishing conditions. Sturgeon Spearing which is usually a two week season, was called short last week due to the large number of sturgeon speared last week. First time in years.

The tournament begins at 6:00 AM Friday morning, with a fish fry from 5-10 PM and the band, Road Trip playing from 7:30-11:00 PM.

Now as exciting as all this is, for me it just won’t compare to last year when we had a few of the Packer alumni staying with us for the tournament. This picture was from last year, but it was probably one of my most memorable times to date.
